Presenter: Meghan Reese
This webinar aims to demystify the concept of toxic positivity, a phenomenon where positive thinking is used to dismiss or undermine negative (but normal) emotions. By defining and providing examples of toxic positivity, I will explore its impact on grieving individuals, including the psychological and social consequences of suppressing our feelings. Meghan’s goal is to educate participants on the importance of experiencing the full spectrum of emotions during the grieving process and to distinguish between healthy support and toxic positivity.
Learning Objectives:
1. Define and Identify Toxic Positivity: Participants will be able to articulate the definition of toxic positivity and provide examples of its manifestations in daily life.
2. Understand Grief and Emotional Acceptance: Participants will describe the stages of grief and explain the importance of embracing and validating all emotions, including those that are uncomfortable.
3. Analyze the Impact of Toxic Positivity: Participants will evaluate the harmful effects of toxic positivity, including its role in emotional suppression and social isolation, using real-life examples and testimonials.
4. Recognize Toxic Positivity in Interactions: Participants will practice identifying toxic positivity in conversations and role-play strategies for responding to it in a supportive and empathetic manner.
5. Implement Healthy Emotional Validation Techniques: Participants will develop practical skills to validate emotions and foster open, judgment-free dialogues about grief.
6. Utilize Support Resources: Participants will leave with a curated list of books, articles, and support groups to further educate themselves and support grievers effectively. All live attendees will receive a certificate of attendance within 48 hours of the event.
