Understanding Grief & Loss Workshop: When a Death Occurs: Creating a Culture of Empathy in Schools

September 28, 2016 @ 8:30 am - 3:00 pm

Understanding Grief and Loss Workshops are designed specifically for professionals working in school settings: teachers, guidance counselors, school nurses, and administrators. Good Grief is one of the largest, nationally recognized children’s bereavement centers and serves families from more than 180 communities throughout New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania.
Research identifies four factors that drastically inhibit a child’s capacity to experience post-traumatic growth: peer, school, family system dysfunction, and how the community at-large responds. Because of this, school personnel are vital members of a grieving student’s environmental system, greatly impacting how a student responds after loss. These workshops are designed to provide school personnel with important insights and valuable tools to support grieving students in schools.

We are faced with a significant challenge in our schools: How do we create a culture of empathy and support for those who are grieving? Often in our interactions with grieving children, teens, and adults we feel uncomfortable and uncertain, and as a result resort to automatic, habitual responses or avoid interaction altogether.  Although our intention is to be empathic, such responses can drive disconnection and create a sense of isolation for the griever. What is empathy? How can we develop the skill of empathy in ourselves?  How can we help others in school –  both children and adults – learn to be empathic? By developing awareness about empathy,  we can create a culture that is truly supportive of those who are grieving a significant loss.
This workshop will help participants learn to:
+ Learn the difference between habitual and empathic responses
+ Explore what it means to be an empathic presence
+ Engage in activities for teaching children and others about death
Understand that what grieving people need most is a sense of connection.
