Grief Expressions Summer Camp Returns
At the end of August, and for the first time in five years, Good Grief hosted Grief Expressions Summer Camp with support from the Santiago Abut Foundation and the Jane and Tad Shepard Family Foundation at the Morristown Family Center. Grief Expressions Camp provides grieving children with many opportunities to explore using the arts to express their emotions and feelings.
Good Grief staff, 44 campers and counselors, and 14 volunteers gathered for a three-day camp. Kids learned valuable ways to give voice to their grief and connect with their person who died, and explored creative ways for self-expression through art, music, writing, photography, and drama along with Sharing Circles.
Thanks to all of our wonderful artists who shared their incredible talents with the kids, including:
- Ariana Hoffman, The Decorative Artist;
- Cathy Roy and the Mayo Performing Arts Center;
- New Jersey Symphony and Bloomberg Philanthropies;
- Spark!Lab and the Morris Museum;
- Lynne DeLade for her Creative Photography;
- Ava Blando for her Songwriting;
- Carol Saggiomo for Drums Alive; and
- Sandy Trombino and Love More Julius Foundation for our Drum Circle;
- Ken Schept, for Storytelling and Reading of his book, “A Gift of Feathers”; and
- Fallon Sullivan, Camp Coordinator and Theatre Extraordinaire.
As Zita, one of our Grief Expressions Campers said “You don’t have to be scared because everyone here actually cares [about] what you’re going through.”
