Be A Superhero At Good Grief’s 4th Annual “5K Walk And Run For Hope”

Madison, NJ – Good Grief will host the 4th annual 5K Run and Walk for Hope at Giralda Farms in Madison, NJ on Sunday, June 4, 2017. Participants are encouraged (but not required) to wear a superhero costume, t-shirt, or cape!  The event features a 5K (3.1 mile) USATF certified race course, a 2-mile walk with activities, kids dashes and a superhero costume contest to raise funds to support programs, education, and advocacy to help children and families to cope with the death of a parent or sibling.

Last year, over 1,000 members of the community turned out to honor the memory of family members and friends who have died, or to support loved ones in Good Grief’s programs. Many participants donned superhero costumes of their own design, to show their resilience and the “superpowers” gained from working through grief after the death of a loved one.

Montclair resident, Jeff Chanin, a Good Grief participant, will be walking this year with his twin children. “When the twins were much younger, we walked for breast cancer, which took my wife, Ellen, from us. We have since participated in Good Grief’s program and we believe in the mission. This is great opportunity to teach my children to be active for great causes in which they believe.” Chanin’s team will include another family who lost their father.

As in previous years, participants are encouraged to form a team, bringing together friends and family members to challenge themselves to complete the course and raise funds to support Good Grief’s mission. Several teams have been formed to honor parents and children, like Team Greyson’s Love. Team captain Cooper, an 8 year-old Good Grief participant from Hamilton (Mercer County), says, “I am walking for my brother Greyson because he is the best.”

The Good Grief 5K Run and Walk for Hope is a family-friendly event. Winners in each age group will be recognized as part of an awards ceremony at the end of the race, along with best superhero costumes. The day’s festivities will also include various forms of entertainment, music and guest speakers.
