SYMPOSIUM TO EXPLORE HOW PEOPLE, COMMUNITIES MOVE FORWARD AFTER SUICIDE

As communities across the country confront an alarming increase in suicides, particularly among young people, public attention is focusing not only on suicide prevention efforts but also on programs to help individuals and communities heal and move forward after suicide.

“Building Resilience After Suicide” is the theme of day-long symposium to be held at The Pingry School in Basking Ridge, NJ on Saturday, March 7 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 pm. The event is open to the public and sponsored by Good Grief, a nationally recognized leader in providing bereavement support to children, families, and communities confronted by the loss of parents or family members.

The symposium will consist of presentations, workshops, a panel discussion and a keynote address by Nancy Rappaport, MD, Associate Professor of Psychiatry Harvard Medical School and author of the award-winning memoir A Child Psychiatrist Explores the Mystery of Her Mother’s Suicide. Dr. Rapport will share insights on the impact of suicide on children and families based on her compelling personal story and extensive professional experience as a child psychiatrist. She will also discuss how survivors of suicide can heal and foster personal growth following tragic loss.

“While we all are concerned about today’s suicide rates, we must also be deeply concerned about the long-term support that is needed for children and the preparedness that is necessary to build resilient communities after a suicide occurs,” said Joe Primo, Good Grief CEO.

Primo will lead a panel discussion featuring prominent leaders from education, religion, and public life and will explore the critical role of leadership in creating the right environment for individuals, organizations and communities to heal and move forward following suicide.
